Trees Correlation to Core Curriculum
Standards listed are not covered exhaustively, but in varying degrees.
Kindergarten
Science
Standard 1 - Processes of generating and communicating scientific evidence framed by Big Ideas.
Standard 2 - Students will gain an understanding of Earth and Space through the study of each materials, celestial movements, and weather
Objective 2 - Observe and describe changes in day and night
Indicators: Investigate, interpret, and explain to others that the sun provides heat and light to Earth
Standard 4 - Students will gain an understanding of Life Science through the study of changes in organisms over time and the nature of living things
Objective 1 - Investigate living things
Indicators:
- Construct questions, give reasons, and share finding about all living things
- Describe some changes in plants and animals that are so slow or so fast that they are hard to see.
Objective 2 - Describe the parts of living things
Indicators: Identify major parts of plants, e.g., roots, stem, leaf, flower, trunk, branches
Social Studies
Standard 2 - Students will recognize their role and responsibilities of being a good citizen
Objective 1 - Demonstrate appropriate ways to behave in different settings
Indicators:
- Explain why families and classrooms have rules
- Demonstrate respect for others, leaders, and the environment
1st Grade
Science
Standard 1 - Processes of generating and communicating scientific evidence framed by Big Ideas.
Standard 3 - Students will gain an understanding of Physical Science through the study of the forces of motion and the properties of materials
Objective 2 - Analyze objects and record their properties
Indicators: Sort, classify, and chart objects by observable properties, e.g., size, shape, color, and texture
Standard 4 - Students will gain an understanding of Life Science through the study of changes in organisms over time and the nature of living things
Objective 1 - Communicate observations about the similarities and differences between offspring and between populations
Indicators:
- Communicate observations about plants and animals, including humans, and how they resemble their parents
- Analyze the individual similarities and differences within and across larger groups
Objective 2 - Living things change and depend upon their environment to satisfy their basic needs
Indicators:
- Make observations about living things and their environment using the five senses
- Describe and model life cycles of living things
Social Studies
Standard 2 - Students will recognize their roles and responsibilities as citizens in the school and in the neighborhood
Objective 2 - Identify and list responsibilities in the school and in the neighborhood
Indicators: Describe and practice responsible behavior inherent in being a good citizen in the school and neighborhood
2nd Grade
Science
Standard 1 - Processes of generating and communicating scientific evidence framed by Big Ideas.
Standard 4 - students will gain an understanding of Life Science through the study of changes in organisms over time and the nature of living things
Objective 2 - Identify basic needs of living things and their abilities to meet their needs
Indicators:
- Communicate and justify how the physical characteristics of living things help them meet their basic needs
- Identify behabiors and reactions of living things in response to changes in the environment including seasonal changes in temperature and precipitation
3rd Grade
Science
Standard 5 - Students will understand that the sun is the main source of heat and light for living things on Earth. They will also understand that the motion of rubbing objects together may produce heat
Objective 1 - Provide evidence showing that the sun is the source of heat and light for Earth
Indicators: Observe and report how sunlight affects plant growth
Social Studies
Standard 1 - Students will understad how geography influences community location and development
Objective 3 - Analyze ways cultures use, maintain, and preserve the physical environment
Indicators: Describe ways to conserve and protect the natural resources
4th Grade
Science
Standard 3 - Students will understand the basic properties of rocks, the processes involved in the formation of soils, and the needs of plants provided by soil
Objective 3 - Observe the basic components of soil and relate the components to plant growth
Indicators:
- Relate the components of soils to the growth of plants in soil
- Explain how plants may help control the erosion of soil
5th Grade
Science
Standard 5 - Students will understand that traits are passed from the parent organism to their offspring, and that sometimes the offspring may possess variations of these traits that may help or hinder survival in a given environment
Objective 1 - Using supporting evidence, show that traits are transferred from a parent organism to its offspring
Indicators: Compare various examples of offspring that do not initially resemble the parent organism but mature to become similar to the parent organism
Objective 2 - Describe how some characteristics could give a species a survival advantage in a particular environment
Indicators:
- Identify that some environments give one species a survival advantage over another
- Describe how a particular physical attribute may provide an advantage for survival in one environment but not in another
7th Grade
Science
Standard 5 - Students will understand that structure is used to develop classification systems
Objective 1 - Classify based on observable properties
Indicators:
- Defend the importance of observation in scientific classification
- Demonstrate that there are many ways to classiy things
Objective 2 - Use and develop a simple classification system
Indicators: Recognize that classification is a tool made by science to describe perceived patterns in nature
Objective 3 - Classify organisms using an orderly pattern based upon structure
Indicators: Use a classification key or field guide to identify organisms
