The Ogden Nature Center is a nonprofit nature education center and wildlife sanctuary. Our mission is to unite people with nature and nurture appreciation and stewardship of the environment. We are recruiting for one summer program assistant to run our youth volunteer program, Employment would begin June 1 2009 and end mid-August.
This position offers a unique opportunity to learn about and practice a wide range of skills including teaching, coordinating volunteer efforts, gardening, event planning, involvement in land management issues and environmental education.
Responsibilities Include:
- Preparing bi-weekly volunteer activities for teens and overseeing activity progress
- Providing instruction related to nature education as part of volunteer efforts
- Recruiting assistance from local experts and creating beneficial partnerships for community volunteer efforts
- Working with volunteer coordinator to assist in land management tasks at Ogden Nature Center
Qualifications:
- Enthusiasm for nature-related volunteerism
- Demonstrated ability to engage youth and teens in service
- An ability to work well as part of a team as well as independently
- Ability to oversee and manage others
- Knowledge of natural history topics including invasive weeds, land management, gardening and others
- Interested in environmental education and conservation
- Love working and being outdoors

Requirements:

Overview of ONC: Founded in 1975, the Ogden Nature Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to uniting people with nature and nurturing appreciation and stewardship of the environment. The 152-acre nature preserve includes 1.5 miles of walking trails, ponds and wetlands, grasslands, an environmentally friendly Visitor Center and a “green” Education Building. ONC’s education programs include School Programs for Children, Preschool Discovery Days, Homeschool Programs, Summer Camps, Community Programs for all ages, Outreach Programs, Interpretive Exhibits, and After School Programs for at-risk populations.
Responsibilities include:
- This full time, exempt position is responsible for managing the entire educational effort, including staff of four teacher/naturalists,contract staff, and a wide variety of programs and partnerships.
- Direct, manage, and inspire education staff and volunteers
- Serve as ONC’s liaison to local, state and national environmental education groups
- Manage annual education budget
- Design, evaluate and implement education programs
- Teach programs
Qualifications:
- MA or MS degree or higher in environmental education or related field
- Knowledgeable of theories and practice of environmental education
- At least 3 yrs related experience
- Supervisory experience and leadership skills
- Skilled in interpretation and teaching
- Demonstrated curriculum design ability
- Love of children and nature
- Computer literate in MS Word, Excel, desktop publishing and databases
- Physically able to lead all programs outside under all weather conditions
Position Start Date: July 13, 2009.
