Wild Bird Rehabilitation Program PDF Print E-mail

Barn Owls With state and federal permits, the Ogden Nature Center cares for wild birds that have been injured or orphaned, releasing most of these birds back to the wilds of Northern Utah.

We receive hundreds of wild birds from the general public -- ordinary people who notice a bird in distress. Other birds are brought to us by the Division of Wildlife Resources and local animal shelters.  We do as much as we can for every bird we receive.

Each year we rehabilitate nearly 700 birds ranging from songbirds and shorebirds to birds of prey. Our wildlife rehabilitation specialist, along with a dedicated group of volunteers, nurse these animals back to health and release over 68% back to their natural habitats.

To see the many species of birds helped by this program, check out our list of bird releases.

If you find an injured or orphaned wild bird, please follow the "I Found a Baby Bird"  chart to see what steps are appropriate.

The Wild Bird Rehabilitation Program is costly to operate and is supported completely by private donations.  If you would like to help support this program financially, please make a contribution through our Share in the Care program.  We are always in need of supplies to care for our bird "patients."  Donations are always appreciated!  Items we commonly need include:

- tweezers & scissors - latex gloves - paper towels - fresh frozen fish (un-gutted) - fresh frozen venison - cages and terrariums - garbage bags - ziploc bags - kennels - gauze pads & cotton balls - q-tips - syringes (all sizes) - nontoxic, biodegradable cleaner - heating pads - frozen boneless skinless chicken thighs - sheets & towels - purina kitten chow - Eukanuba chicken and rice kitten food - Beech nut chicken and broth baby food - saline solution -  dog food - powdered egg whites - frozen wild blueberries - avian vitamins - Kaytee bird formula

ACCIDENT PREVENTION

Here are some ideas for preventing avian accidents around your home.
  • Cut six-pack container rings before recycling so animals can't get their heads or necks caught.
  • Be sure to cap off chimneys and dryer vents so birds and other wildlife aren't tempted to move in.
  • Dispose of oil and other toxic substances at the proper facilities.  Clean up chemical spills safely and quickly.
  • Use environmentally friendly pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
  • Be a responsible pet owner.  Keep your pets away from wildlife.
  • Place decals on the outside of large windows and glass doors to prevents birds from crashing into them.
  • Collect all lines, lures and hooks and dispose of them properly when fishing.
