We are deeply saddened to share the loss of our raven, Cronk, who passed away on September 26, 2025.
Cronk came to the Ogden Nature Center in 1998 after being found with an injured foot in Bountiful, Utah. He was already an adult when he arrived, and while his exact age was unknown, we estimated him to be around 30 in recent years. At the time of his passing, he was likely closer to 40, as suggested by age-related conditions common in older birds. Common Ravens live about 15 years in the wild and can reach around 40 years in human care.
Cronk quickly became a community icon and a beloved member of the Ogden Nature Center family. Visitors, staff, and volunteers alike were charmed by his bold, spirited personality, and he inspired countless people to learn more about ravens and the natural world. He thrived in an environment where he could safely interact with his caregivers and guests, showing off his intelligence, curiosity, and playful nature. As a member of the corvid family, considered the most intelligent group of birds in the world, Cronk could even speak a few words. He delighted in interacting with everyone around him and would often greet visitors with a cheerful ‘hi.’
It was an immense privilege to have Cronk in our care. He was more than an ambassador for his species; he was a beloved member of our Nature Center family. His loss is deeply felt by our team and community alike. Thank you for your support and understanding as we mourn his passing. Cronk will be dearly missed.
